Van Oord is a leader in offshore wind farm construction. The company is responsible for the cable pull-in operation for the Sofia Offshore Wind Farm project located on the Doggersbank in the North Sea. This operation involves providing the wind turbine with power cables to transport the generated energy. In 2019, DROMEC delivered a special series of 10 user-friendly pull-in systems for this application and is now supplying another series of 10 systems.

The pull-in system, developed specifically by DROMEC, is used to draw the thick power cable from the ship into the wind turbine. It is a complex tool designed for this purpose. Specific variants have been designed for different continental areas. For instance, in the waters of the United Kingdom, additional safety standards are required, such as LOLER and PUWER.
Before installing the wind turbine on the platform, the pull-in operation takes place. The cables are pulled from the ship through the seabed into the platform using the DROMEC pull-in system. This system features a constant tension function, ensuring that the cable is always kept at a preset tension, even when unexpected changes in cable force occur. This prevents cable overload. This special tool has a nominal pulling force of 10 tons, which is maintained through friction between the rope and a special capstan head. The combination of the number of wraps and a fairlead ensures the safety of the pulling force up to a holding force of 12 tons.
Pieter, engineer DROMEC: “We designed this compact pull-in system specifically for operations of this kind, and since then, the demand from various customers has significantly increased. It’s a user-friendly tool that can be installed for any pull-in operation on a random platform. The combination of its low weight and high force, along with advanced control software, provides real time savings for the customer. The system can be used both in a standing and hanging configuration. Various improvements have been made for the new series, such as the nominal pulling force and the hard-anodized capstan head. This material is more resistant to corrosion. The frame is also more user-friendly with an integrated lifting eye and an additional guide bracket, allowing the cable to wind on and off at a 70-degree angle.”
The system operates with automatic tensioning. A fairlead that runs in sync with the capstan head through the control system ensures a consistent tension between the fairlead and the capstan, guaranteeing the pulling force by the capstan without the need for a person to hold the loose end continuously. The system is electrically powered, compact, and lightweight, weighing 550 kg. It weighs 475 kg without the detachable fairlead. Once the operation is complete, the system is moved to the next wind turbine platform.
Cordeel Netherlands is involved in a wide range of construction projects, from residential to commercial. For the Clubhouse Boompjes project in Rotterdam, WVH Facade Technology approached DROMEC Winches to develop an ingenious winch system for the construction of the residential towers.
Winch System for Residential Towers
Cordeel Netherlands, in collaboration with WVH Facade Technology, is constructing two residential towers in Rotterdam, with heights of 100 and 70 meters. The bare concrete structures are being further developed using finished facade elements. These 1200 kg facade elements are lifted into place using a DROMEC winch system. What sets this system apart is the bottom-up assembly of the residential tower, with each floor being progressively expanded in 5 steps.
WVH designed the residential towers with floor grooves to facilitate the lifting of facade elements. On each floor, two winch systems with a combined lifting capacity of 2 tons are installed in lifting frames. These lifting frames can extend up to 1.5 meters and are stabilized. On the ground floor, two tagline winches are in place to maintain Constant Tension on the element in the correct position. As the element reaches its destination, it is slid into place using the lifting frames. DROMEC Winches also integrated a third lifting frame into this design, providing the ability to lift ceiling elements. All winch systems are electrically driven, which is of significant environmental importance in cities like Rotterdam.
In this ingenious winch system, the control system plays a pivotal role, as all components must work in harmony to ensure a safe working environment. The three lifting frames can be operated simultaneously with a single joystick, and they can also be controlled individually for fine-tuning the lifting operation. The Constant Tension tagline winches on the ground floor can be operated remotely through the control system.
Gijs, the engineer, states, “The winch systems working together allow for very precise positioning of facade or ceiling elements through Constant Tension. This is especially significant in urban areas with high-rise buildings.”
Compact and Safe
The winch system is designed to be highly compact and can be placed in the construction elevator. Each lifting frame, weighing 1000 kg, is equipped with wheels for easy mobility. The winch system has a cable storage capacity of 110 meters and is secured with a Dyneema chain. In case of cable breakage, the Dyneema chain serves as a safety measure. With this winch system, DROMEC Winches has once again elevated the bar for their projects.

Before a cable layer can set sail with a full carousel, the cable often needs to be spooled onshore. DROMEC Winches has developed a winch system that can guide the cable under tension, ensuring it is neatly placed in the carousel and can be paid out at a later time.
For the Seafarers’ Charity Fund, WIND organized a challenge in the Lake District in England. Participants successfully climbed 24 peaks within 48 hours, covering 33 miles with a 13,000 ft ascent. And they conquered it!

Power and control
DROMEC winches builds the Constant Tension windingmachine from 1.5 to 250 tons. The pulling force increases from 500 kilos to 44 tons. This makes the system suitable for many segments.

This spooling machine will be applied on board of Deme’s Spartacus for rewinding the winches with new steel cables under the right pre-tension. Because of the special design, the cable can leave the machine at several locations so all ships winches can be reached while the machine itself can remain in 1 fixed location.
