Welcome to DROMEC, my name is Cees Drost. Today, we are at DROMEC where we develop and build winches. We are a family business, the second generation. In 1996, my father started with drive technology and later added winch construction, which is what we are fully engaged in today.

DROMEC is an innovator in the field of winches and winch systems. If you look around here, you’ll see various models, and the secret behind this is our software. With this software, we can combine an infinite number of models. Any customer request, no matter how complex, can be entered into this software, resulting in a design that suits the customer perfectly, exactly what they are looking for. We design it, we build it, and if the customer wishes, we also handle commissioning on site, wherever that may be.

DROMEC Winches over 5 Years of Stable Power Behind Dubai’s Zipline

The longest urban zipline in the world has been built in Dubai Marina. The XLine Dubai Marina reaches heights of up to 170 meters and spans a length of 1 kilometer. Enthusiasts can descend at a speed of 80 km/h, enjoying breathtaking views. DROMEC developed the winch system for setting up this zipline, combining safety and control with an ultra-lightweight design.

“The challenge in installing the zipline lay in the complexity of the dense urban environment, combined with the task of pulling the cable from a high tower to a lower harbor area. Using aids like helicopters or drones was not permitted because the zipline route crosses over a highway, railway, bridge, harbor, and high-rise buildings.”

Modular Winch System

For rigging this tourist attraction atop the Amwaj Towers, DROMEC Winches developed a modular winch system. This system includes an ultra-light spool system combined with a pull-in system with a pulling force of 5 tons. These components were transported in parts via a narrow staircase to the rooftop and installed on-site. Under very precise Constant Tension, the operation commenced, and the heavy steel cable reels were unrolled and pulled upwards. The winch system will be reactivated for zipline maintenance and cable replacement.


The zipline is equipped with strong steel cables capable of withstanding high loads and tensions. The starting platform and the end location are robustly constructed using high-quality materials to ensure safety and stability. The engineering required detailed calculations for cable tension, forces on anchor points, and aerodynamic effects on the riders.

Braking Mechanism

An advanced braking system ensures a smooth and safe stop. The braking mechanism is designed to automatically engage as the rider approaches the end location. With a harness connected to a trolley, the rider glides over the cable. This trolley contains wheels and a redundant safety system to ensure the rider remains safe during the ride.


The combination of advanced technology and safety features makes the XLine Dubai Marina one of the most innovative ziplines in the world. The zipline has two parallel lines starting from the Amwaj Towers, allowing two riders to glide simultaneously. This not only increases capacity but also enhances the experience with a unique view of the Dubai skyline and the marina!

Series of tractionwinches for inland shipping Brazil

Blommaert Aluminium is a market leader in aluminum ship hatches for inland shipping. With a unique system, the ship hatches are efficiently used in transportation across inland waterways. DROMEC Winches has developed a new serie of traction winches for this system.

The collaboration between Blommaert and DROMEC has been constructive for over 10 years. With new techniques and materials, this serie of a total of 56 units has received a significant update. The majority of them are destined for inland barges in Brazil, South America.

Traction Winch Systems

The two traction winch systems stand upright with feet attached to the foredeck of the barge. The cables are fastened to the hatch covers and are retracted using the traction winches. By cumulative frictional force, the winches achieve a pulling force of 700 kg. The traction winches have two pulleys on each side with a cable thickness of 6.4 mm. In combination with a tensioning bolt, the cable is continuously kept under tension on the two pulleys, pulling the hatch covers into position.

Pin/hole connection

The construction of the traction winches is entirely made of flat sheet metal, with traditional pin/hole connections. With this age-old technique, no bending is necessary, making the production process simple. Through this technique combined with the Protalloy surface treatment, the system is robust and has high corrosion resistance.

Electric drive and manual crank

The central electric drive in the winches simultaneously operates both traction systems on either side with a 1.5 kWh electric motor. A manual crank is built on the motor’s rear axle so that the hatch covers can also be operated manually in case of emergency. Instead of the crank, an operator can also use a cordless drill that can be attached to the system. In South America, power supply is not a given, so this option has been specially developed for this application. There is a brake with a hand brake lever on the electric motor to release the brake during manual operation. With this project, DROMEC Winches has once again achieved a successful collaboration with Blommaert!

It often starts with a good idea, preferably on a piece of scrap paper. After an initial consultation, we prepare one or more proposals, including a target price and preliminary drawing. Your idea or problem, always remains central in this. If the feeling on both sides is good, we start. Thanks to our own inhouse developed and written project software, your project stays in the picture and under control from start to finish, including the planning and delivery time.
