Specials equipment for DICK&DOOF Curacao

DICK&DOOF has an excellent reputation in all areas of mechanical construction within the energy sector and downstream activities in the oil and gas industry. D&D specializes in transportation, demolition, and construction, serving as an industrial contractor for Royal Dutch Shell in the Caribbean and Latin America. For a project in Suriname, DROMEC Winches developed two winch systems with controls.

Electric winch in frame

The electric winches with a pulling force of 2 tons are used to pull stove pipes at a construction site. The winch systems can also be deployed in storage tanks to move bottom plates. A special ECH-2000 frame with cutouts has been developed for these winches, allowing them to be moved on with a forklift.

Roelof van Urk, DROMEC:
‘We have these winches in stock as standard. We were able to deliver them with frames within 5 weeks. For DICK&DOOF, this quick delivery time was crucial for the Suriname project.’

Efficient winch system

With this plug & play principle, the winch systems can be efficiently used for various tasks. Even in D&D’s future projects, the winches can be deployed internationally for the realization of new constructions.

Manoel da Silva, D&D:
‘Our experience from the purchase process to the delivery from DROMEC has been perfect. Agreements were duly fulfilled!’

DROMEC Winches develops umbilical winch for Seatools

Seatools is a subsea technology company that provides high-end solutions for a wide range of underwater challenges. The majority of solutions they deliver are custom-made and cater to markets ranging from aquaculture to offshore oil and gas. DROMEC Winches has developed a special umbilical winch for Seatools.

Umbilical Winch

The depth of the sea is a determining factor for placing offshore wind turbines. Foundations are realized by driving so-called pile casings into the seabed, which generates significant vibrations that can disrupt marine life. These vibrations need to be minimized as much as possible. Using a specially developed bubble curtain, where air is blown into the water through holes, the vibrations are dampened. To supply air to the system, a 150-meter-long hose is extended from the sea vessel. DROMEC Winches has developed an umbilical winch for this application.

Constant Tension

As the bubble curtain descends to the seabed, the electric umbilical winch automatically pays out the hose using Constant Tension. This CT function monitors the preset maximum allowable tension on the hose, thereby preventing damage. With a pulling force of 1500 kg and a hose width of 90 mm, it is a relatively large system. In this project, DROMEC also provided special controls so that the client can remotely operate the machine. In case of unforeseen extreme weather conditions, an “hammerlug” coupling can be used to disconnect the air hose from the winch and float it overboard. Additionally, the winch is equipped with a spooling mechanism to ensure the hose is neatly wound on the drum. An additional spool guide prevents damage to the umbilical hose. The entire system is compactly built within a shipping container frame, making it easy to transport and relocate during offshore operations.

Paul, engineer, says,
“Seatools is a great company, and there is much appreciation for their quality and expertise. DROMEC Winches aligns well with Seatools in terms of mentality, engineering, controls, and assembly, making it a pleasant collaboration!”

DROMEC Winches constructs winch system for megadoor Smulders UK

Smulders is an international steel construction company operating in the onshore and offshore sectors. For a new production facility in Newcastle, DROMEC Winches at the request of ASAV lifting- and hoisting technology has developed an advanced winch system for an impressive megadoor.

Megadoor

The impressive production facility stands at a height of 36 meters and a width of 47.5 meters, equipped with a megadoor operated by two powerful winches on each side. The megadoor consists of steel panels divided into sections, hanging from the steel structure. The advanced winch systems effortlessly lift the panels upward or lower them downward, ensuring perfect alignment during opening and closing. Additionally, the winches can be operated independently for added safety or in case of a malfunction. The winch system has the capacity to hoist a weight of 135 tons on a single cable.

Winch System

The two winches are strategically positioned on either side of the megadoor. The cable runs up and over multiple pulleys on one side and descends to a fixed point on the other side. The system is precisely mirrored on the opposite side. Both winches operate synchronously to maintain the desired speed during the opening and closing of the megadoor. The winch system has a pulling force of 19 tons and can handle peak loads of up to 38 tons. In situations where the winches need to bear the weight or during emergencies, the system operates at a lower speed to ensure safety.

Jesper Becks from Smulders:
“The installation of the megadoor was a complex process that required a combination of technical expertise and practical experience. Given our specialization in steel construction, we relied on DROMEC as a reliable partner for the supply and installation of the electromechanical components. DROMEC handled the entire process, from the engineering of the winches and lifting mechanism to the installation. Transparency, flexibility, and safety were paramount at every step. Thanks to DROMEC’s technical knowledge and flexibility, the installation of this impressive 135-ton megadoor went smoothly. The successful and safe completion of the installation is a significant milestone in this project.”

Controls

Both winches can be easily operated using a control panel or a button. The control system includes a switch to detect whether the doors are in the upper or lower position. Sensors acting as limit switch are installed at both the top and bottom of the door. Furthermore, the door is equipped with a wind sensor to prevent opening in strong winds. DROMEC has also incorporated a built-in functionality to seamlessly switch from the regular power supply to a generator if necessary.

Pieter van Roekel from DROMEC:
“The Smulders project showcases a combination of precision and weight within a timeframe of approximately 15 weeks. We have made every effort to fully support Smulders throughout the process. The installation and tensioning of the cables were carried out by our experienced team in collaboration with our partners at TWS.”

Custom EWA-650-KB anchorwinch

This week we again supplied an EWA-650-KBV wire anchorwinch. Due to the onboard situation, the requirement was to position the winch directly near the living area, to realise extra free deck space.

Because of this a modification to the bandbrake handle was needed. Now the handle points horizontally forward instead of the standard vertical position.
Also a 35 x 7 non rotating cable is spooled on the drum with right pre-tension. This cable is equipped with an open spelter socket to make anchor assembly quite easy.

Are you looking for a standard anchor winch or are you looking for a special execution? Dromec provides a solution!
