DROMEC Winches constructs winch system for megadoor Smulders UK

Smulders is an international steel construction company operating in the onshore and offshore sectors. For a new production facility in Newcastle, DROMEC Winches at the request of ASAV lifting- and hoisting technology has developed an advanced winch system for an impressive megadoor.

Megadoor

The impressive production facility stands at a height of 36 meters and a width of 47.5 meters, equipped with a megadoor operated by two powerful winches on each side. The megadoor consists of steel panels divided into sections, hanging from the steel structure. The advanced winch systems effortlessly lift the panels upward or lower them downward, ensuring perfect alignment during opening and closing. Additionally, the winches can be operated independently for added safety or in case of a malfunction. The winch system has the capacity to hoist a weight of 135 tons on a single cable.

Winch System

The two winches are strategically positioned on either side of the megadoor. The cable runs up and over multiple pulleys on one side and descends to a fixed point on the other side. The system is precisely mirrored on the opposite side. Both winches operate synchronously to maintain the desired speed during the opening and closing of the megadoor. The winch system has a pulling force of 19 tons and can handle peak loads of up to 38 tons. In situations where the winches need to bear the weight or during emergencies, the system operates at a lower speed to ensure safety.

Jesper Becks from Smulders:
“The installation of the megadoor was a complex process that required a combination of technical expertise and practical experience. Given our specialization in steel construction, we relied on DROMEC as a reliable partner for the supply and installation of the electromechanical components. DROMEC handled the entire process, from the engineering of the winches and lifting mechanism to the installation. Transparency, flexibility, and safety were paramount at every step. Thanks to DROMEC’s technical knowledge and flexibility, the installation of this impressive 135-ton megadoor went smoothly. The successful and safe completion of the installation is a significant milestone in this project.”

Controls

Both winches can be easily operated using a control panel or a button. The control system includes a switch to detect whether the doors are in the upper or lower position. Sensors acting as limit switch are installed at both the top and bottom of the door. Furthermore, the door is equipped with a wind sensor to prevent opening in strong winds. DROMEC has also incorporated a built-in functionality to seamlessly switch from the regular power supply to a generator if necessary.

Pieter van Roekel from DROMEC:
“The Smulders project showcases a combination of precision and weight within a timeframe of approximately 15 weeks. We have made every effort to fully support Smulders throughout the process. The installation and tensioning of the cables were carried out by our experienced team in collaboration with our partners at TWS.”

Custom EWA-650-KB anchorwinch

This week we again supplied an EWA-650-KBV wire anchorwinch. Due to the onboard situation, the requirement was to position the winch directly near the living area, to realise extra free deck space.

Because of this a modification to the bandbrake handle was needed. Now the handle points horizontally forward instead of the standard vertical position.
Also a 35 x 7 non rotating cable is spooled on the drum with right pre-tension. This cable is equipped with an open spelter socket to make anchor assembly quite easy.

Are you looking for a standard anchor winch or are you looking for a special execution? Dromec provides a solution!

UFO restaurant Rotterdam

During a weekend trip in Rotterdam,  I came across an old acquaintance of Dromec in the magazine “Inside Rotterdam” namely the UFO restaurant.

In this unique restaurant you can dine at a height of 42 meters and while the floor rotates slowly, you have a 360 degree view of the Rotterdam skyline. Dromec designed and built the top section of this tower.

The top section houses 4 Dromec hydraulic HPH-20000 winches, controls and the hydraulic power packs to raise and lower the restaurant in a safe and comfortable way  .

This project shows Dromec’s strength, namely providing turnkey customer specific solutions.

Dromec supplied a Dinamic Oil S20 winch from stock

This week we supplied again a Dinamic Oil winch type S20 equipped with cable pressure roller and 3-last winding detection.

The S20 has a capacity of 2mT on layer 4 and stores 76 mtr. Ø12mm cable. Hoisting speed of 49 mtr/min is possible.

Depending on winch type, we can supply several options as: electronic load limiter, encoder, endswitches etc.

You can also visit our new website for detailed info about our Dinamic Oil winch programm.

Dromec supplied 2 pcs ATEX Fall Arrestors

This week, Dromec delivered 2 pcs so called Fall Arrestors.

Purpose of a Fall Arrestor is well known in the world of climbing and mountaineering, and in this case designed in ATEX for applications in the Oil&Gas industry.

If, due to any reason, a load comes down uncontrollably, the Fall Arrestor intervenes and will bring the load down in a save and preset speed.

Dromec designs and produced several Fall Arrestors based on customer spec’s and for  several application.

EPV-5000 tugger winches with central control

For our customer Geo. Gleistein & Sohn GmbH,  the well known producer of Dyneema fiber ropes as GeoYacht, GeoMarine, GeoProfessional & Geolift, Dromec developed and build a winchsystem on customer requirements.

Set contains 2 pcs. EPV-5000 tugger winches with central control that makes it possible to control each winch individualy and pre-tension each Dyneema fiber rope from 500 up to 5000 kg during production.

System is operated by wireless remote control that makes it possible to adjust the speed and CT values as required in the manufacturing process.

This project is a good example of a “Customer idea” translated by Dromec into a technical solution with focus on price.

Customer-specific: EWH-700-VE winches

In mobile applications is quite often 24Vdc available. For this, Dromec also supplies customer-specific winch solutions such as these EWH-700-VE winches.

With a capacity of 700 kg on first layer @ 5 mtr/min, these winches are used in mobile hoisting application during construction of houses. On these winches a 24Vdc IP55 brake motor is applied, that is powered over a DC controller by crane’s  own batterypackage.

Winches are supplied including  20 mtr RunnerTwin Tec Dyneema fiber rope.

Kitepower & Dromec: Building the New Generation of Wind Energy Systems

Kiterpower published a great testimonial about our tailor-made winches, winch systems, controls and power transmission. You can read the full article here: https://thekitepower.com/kitepower-and-dromec-building-the-new-generation-of-wind-energy-systems/

Dromec specializes in tailor-made winches, winch systems, renewables,  controls, reel machines and power transmission. Dromec’s approach assures the highest reliability in power transmission applications and boasts dynamic and innovative manufacturing techniques when it comes to winch systems. Such features had made Dromec a key development partner of Kitepower since day one, when back in 2015, at the time of REACH, the Dutch company has joined the mission to develop Kitepower’s first commercial Airborne Wind Energy System (AWES).

The role of Dromec is to manufacture the ground station (GS) of the Kitepower AWES, an exclusive development path that so far has brought to life two versions of Kitepower’s combined smart generator and winch system. Within a Kitepower system, the ground station is the component that converts the mechanical energy of the kite into electrical power and is also used to reel the kite in and out by using the generator as a motor.

Kitepower is proud to be cooperating with Dromec in the construction of an energy system capable to play a significant role in the EU’s energy mix and majorly contribute to the global energy transition to renewables.
